The countdown has begun: Navy officials are compiling the list of 15,588 sailors who will be advanced to the next paygrade. The results should be released before Thanksgiving.

Navy officials are expecting to keep with recent tradition and release the names before the holiday. Still, they’re not sure yet when the list will be available on BuPers Online and then Navy Times. so check navytimes.com often, and we’ll post the results as soon as we’re able.

This cycle, there is an overall 16.69 percent chance to advance, up slightly from 16.42 percent in May, but still lower than the 19.86 percent in fall 2009.

Although quotas increased by 1,081 compared with the spring total, the numbers of test passers rose by 4,656, keeping competition tight.

With retention at historic highs, officials say advancement chances will not get much better until the economy improves and more sailors begin to leave the ranks — though they’re happy they were able to hold the line this cycle against any further reductions in quotas or opportunity.
