I have an external HDD that I suspect might have corrupt files on. I would like to do a scan for corrupt files, bad sectors and disk errors without having to restart windows and the doing the scan outside of windows like Check Disk does. any third party freeware I can use that is good?
It would have been good to know what Windows do you have installed. Some don't work on Vista or 7.
The only one I know that should work on all is Disk Suite 2009:

It should let you check for errors and bad sectors without needing to restart.
Why not just use checkdisk?
You only ever need to reboot when using chkdsk because it's the volume that windows is residing on, and there are files in use. if it's just an external drive, chkdsk will work without reboot.
chkdsk E: /r
Where E is whatever drive letter assigned to your external HDD when you plug it in.
Want to check files on external HDD without restarting Windows?
corrupt files, e 105, external hdd, reboot, third party
