Mall will host Chanukah party Dec. 7

a unique Chanukah celebration will take place at Solomon Pond Mall on Tuesday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m.

Features of the program include: fill and glaze a jelly doughnut, design your own Chanukah bracelet, live music, and of course lots of hot latkes (potato pancakes), doughnuts, chocolate gelt (coins), and dreidels. a clown will be making balloons at the event. the event will be held in the Solomon Pond Mall at the JC Penney court, in front of a six-foot menorah.

the celebration is being organized and sponsored by Chabad of Westborough.

the lighting of the Menorah commemorates the ancient miracle of the Maccabee’s victory over the Syrian-Greek Empire. according to Jewish tradition, when the Maccabees’ reentered the Temple Mount after regaining their independence, they found that it had been desecrated and vandalized. they wanted to rededicate the sanctuary by lighting the candelabra, but could only find one single jar of pure oil that had not been tampered with. a miracle occurred and the small quantity of oil burned for eight days. Hence the eight-day-long Festival of Lights.

Chabad is an organization known locally and internationally for its wide array of social and educational programs that seek to promote a fun, hands-on approach to Judaism. Two other programs include a Grand Menorah Lighting at the Shrewsbury Town Common (Rte. 140 and Main St.) on Wednesday, December 1st at 6:00 pm and at the Westboro Rotary on Sunday, December 5th at 12:15 pm. the Westboro lighting will feature a community menorah making contest for kids ages 6-13.
