Hervey Bay MP Ted Sorensen says the Queensland Government should have done more to support the redevelopment of the Urangan Boat Harbour.
The $800 million project, which included a 230 berth marina, 100 boat trailer parks and several boat ramps, has been set aside due to the current economic conditions.
The Fraser Coast Regional Council says it would have brought up to 1,500 new jobs to the region.
Mr Sorensen says too many Government departments were involved in the project.
“I think the Government should have done a lot more. even with the whole boat harbour development you really don’t know which department you’re working with half the time,” he said.
“If they could get together I think and make some decisions on what was supposed to happen it would have been a lot easier I think instead of having it across so many different departments.
“I think what they needed to do was have one department to look after the whole thing.
“Yes, I think it’s made it fairly difficult for the developers to go in and try and negotiate a way through the whole process because it is quite difficult, the whole process, dealing with all different departments and trying to get them all to agree is pretty difficult sometimes.”

I've been exercising regularly for 3 years now but recently I hurt my hamstring and realize I need better stretching techniques.
I have never been into YOGA but am thinking that it's time…
What is a great beginners yoga video?
I highly recommend doing Patricia Walden's "Yoga for Beginners" dvd, which is distributed by Gaiam. Patricia Walden teaches in the Iyengar tradition, which means she uses props such as chairs to help an inflexible person come into the pose with more ease.
She also uses straps for those who have limited hamstring flexibility as this is a gentler way of coming into forward bends.
She has two dvd's for "Yoga for Beginners", available online or in most alternative/health stores.
I really like Yoga Zone's dvd's. The link below shows a search on 'yoga zone' from amazon.com. they have beginner as well as higher levels, and all different types. they tend to explain poses for beginners, as well as the more challenging version for those at an intermediate level. I liked their 'Yoga for a Strong and Healthy Back'. It's very mellow, and explains the poses in detail.
I also have the 'Flexibility and Stress Release', which may be helpful for your situation. I really enjoyed it.
Enjoy, and Namaste!
What is a good beginners yoga video to use?
Perched on the brick stairs of the new Chipotle with shiny silver goggles atop his knitted ski cap, Dewey Nelson nonchalantly leaned against one of the off-white pillars last night, prepared to spend a night outside to be the Blacksburg store’s first paying customer. not even shivering once, he made braving the frigid conditions outside the burrito haven seem routine.
“it is a true test of manhood. it is a real test of my convictions,” Nelson said, adding that he makes campouts for events such as DVD releases a habit. “I wasn’t born with a silver burrito in my mouth. I have to work for it.”
Nelson, a Roanoke resident, along with several other men, camped out in front of Chipotle Monday afternoon, prepared to stay wide-eyed through the night, just to purchase a burrito this morning.
Blacksburg’s Chipotle will open today at 11 a.m. after several months of construction delays. There will be no delay in welcoming its first customers.

At least four burrito-obsessed troopers intended to stay the night outside the restaurant.
“it is like, why do we cry when we see ‘Star Trek 2: The Wrath of Khan?’ Why do we feel patriotic before we hear ‘The Star Spangled Banner?’ Why do we fall in love?” Nelson asked, his voice getting higher-pitched and rowdier with every question.
“Chipotle is the pure happiness of this world condensed into one tinfoil-wrapped burrito.”
Some Blacksburg dwellers, including Nelson himself, were lucky enough to get their hands on special Chipotle promotional cards, offering one free burrito, chips, salsa and a soda yesterday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the day before the actual opening. A customer offered the determined camper an extra card, but he refused it.
On the other hand, Charlie Rearick, who hasn’t had a Chipotle burrito in a long time, since one of the restaurants opened in his hometown six years ago, was quite disappointed he didn’t receive a card. He was also frustrated while watching all the fortunate people who were blessed with burritos a day earlier than him. However, he was willing to wait, because in his opinion, it was worth it.

Newswise — A new study reports that yoga can reduce the stress of cancer diagnosis and treatment experienced by childhood cancer patients and their parents. the findings were published in the September/October 2010 edition of Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, published by the Association of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Nurses (APHON).
"Parents and adolescents showed a decrease in anxiety and increase in sense of well-being" following yoga sessions conducted for the study, the authors wrote. Megan V. Thygeson, BA, Mary C. Hooke, PhD, RN, CNS, CPON, Jeanine Clapsaddle, MA, LAMFT, CCLS, Angela Robbins, MS, RN, CNP, and Kristin Moquist, MA, RN, CNP, CPON wrote the study, which they conducted at the Children's Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.
"Yoga is emerging as an effective complementary therapy in adult oncology," the authors wrote, "promising benefits for decreasing symptom distress including fatigue, insomnia, mood, and stress resulting in improved quality of life." the authors explored a new area, focusing on childhood cancer patients and their families, noting that parents experience stress and anxiety because of the uncertainty of the disease and the suffering of their children.
Children in the study between the ages of 7-12 did not show any change in their anxiety or sense of well-being. however, adolescents between the ages of 13-18 years and the parents of hospitalized patients showed significant improvement.
"Teens reported that that they felt relaxed and calmer, and that it (yoga) was fun," the authors wrote. Parents detailed even greater benefits. Parents found the yoga sessions were relaxing, allowed them to stretch their muscles and strengthen their bodies, and relieved stress. they felt better about themselves, and those who participated in the sessions with their children felt it helped them bond with their children.
Yoga lowers heart rate and blood pressure and improves circulation and oxygenation. it also improves muscle tone, circulation, pulmonary function, coordination and flexibility. "Larger studies are needed to evaluate the influence of yoga on other distressing patient symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbance, pain and nauseam" the authors wrote.

Yoga Found to be Beneficial for Childhood Cancer Patients and Their Parents
A 650-worker locomotive factory, a 500-job service center for Ascension Health and another 650 new jobs at student loan firm Sallie Mae and call-center operator Affiliated Computer Services.
And that was just on Friday.
Earlier in the week, two other companies announced expansions with 850 new jobs.
The last time such a large number of jobs was announced in the state was in 2007, when Honda and Toyota rolled out plans to hire more than 3,000 employees in Greensburg and Lafayette.
This week’s announcements came at a time when the economically reeling state badly needs such a fresh helping of jobs.
“It’s been a great week for Indiana in terms of all these announcements. They just came to fruition at the right time,” said Terry Murphy, vice president of the Muncie-Delaware County Economic Development Alliance, which helped lure the locomotive factory to Muncie.
Gov. Mitch Daniels happily emceed most of the week’s job announcements, traveling with his entourage from Columbus to Muncie and even hosting the Ascension announcement in his Statehouse office.
“Weeks like this remind us that Indiana is a leader in private-sector jobs creation because we’ve built the best sandbox for business,” the governor said.
The week’s worth of business expansions will create 2,650 jobs over the next five years, assuming they play out as outlined.
Through September, Indiana has created 43,100 private-sector jobs, the sixth-highest number in the country, according to U.S. Department of Labor statistics. the five states ahead of Indiana all have much larger populations.
Friday’s announcements supply reason for cheer in a state with an unemployment rate of 10.1 percent in September, well above the national jobless rate of 9.6 percent:
St. Louis-based Ascension Health, the nation’s largest Roman Catholic hospital system, said it picked Indianapolis for a 500-worker service center that will open in the summer. It will be one of the first such consolidated back-office operations of its kind among hospital groups in the nation.
Progress Rail Services, a subsidiary of Caterpillar, announced it will build a $50 million locomotive assembly plant in a long-vacant or underused Muncie factory, creating 650 jobs with a $29 million annual payroll by 2012.
Sallie Mae ended any speculation about the future of its Indiana operations, saying it’s closing locations in 2011 in Florida and Texas instead, and moving work from there to the Fishers and Muncie offices, creating 350 jobs. Sallie Mae has lobbied against congressional attempts to have the federal government take over its function of servicing federal student loans.
Affiliated Computer Services, a division of Xerox, will hire 300 more call-center agents in Anderson, where it already employs 700 people. the new hires are needed to handle customer calls for a new Affiliated client, a wireless phone provider.
The diversity of the new jobs — from call center workers and mechanics to software engineers and accountants — bodes well for Indiana, said Jerry Conover, director of the Indiana Business Research Center at Indiana University.
“We are not putting all our eggs in one basket,” Conover said. Indiana traditionally has been over-reliant on manufacturing, he said.
The flurry of corporate job-creating announcements shows that Indiana’s reputation as a relatively low-tax state with a favorable business climate is attractive to companies now looking to expand as the recession is at an end and the economy shows signs of improving, said Michael Hicks, director of Ball State University’s Bureau of Business Research.
State and local governments are pumping millions of dollars in tax subsidies and abatements — most in the form of tax breaks — to companies involved in the expansions.
The largest of the subsidies will go to Alabama-based Progress Rail, which was offered $22.5 million in property tax abatements locally and up to $4.5 million from the state in tax credits and training grants if it creates the promised jobs at what will be the first locomotive plant built in the nation in many years.

To lure Ascension’s service center, the state’s business promotion arm, the Indiana Economic Development Corp., negotiated up to $5 million in state tax credits.
Ascension officials said they’re looking to lease office space for the center on the Northwestside off Michigan Road. That’s near the Ascension-owned St. Vincent Hospital campus on West 86th Street.
Indianapolis beat out Nashville, Tenn., and Birmingham, Ala., as finalists for the center, said Mayor Greg Ballard.
The center represents “a pretty massive transformation” in the way Ascension’s hospitals operate because it will combine much of their human resources, accounting and finance and supply chain functions in the one spot, said Lee Coulter, an Ascension vice president who’ll head the new center.
The $11 million center should save the 70-hospital Ascension system millions of dollars in operating costs by the time it’s fully staffed in 2013, he said. those savings will be critical to the hospital system as the federal government reduces Medicaid and Medicare payments to hospitals, and private health plans also continue to look for ways to shave costs, he said.
Indiana Democratic Party Chairman Dan Parker called the job announcements “all good” but questioned whether they were timed to burnish the image of Republicans as job creators, days before the general election Tuesday. Republicans will try to wrest control of the House from Democrats in the election.
“Anything close to an election has political overtones,” Parker said.
But he discounted any advantage the job-creating announcements might give Republicans at the polls.
“In terms of trying to affect Indiana’s election, it’s too little, too late. Voters know what Indiana’s situation is. the governor’s jobs record . . . is not very great.”
Daniels’ spokeswoman, Jane Jankowski, said there was no attempt to pool the job announcements for the week before the election.
“We only wish we were that good,” she said. “These are blue-ribbon companies, and they determine when they are going to make announcements about their future.”
Murphy, the Muncie economic development official, said the Progress Rail deal had been in negotiations since July, and “the reason they wanted to announce (this week) is Progress Rail wants to get in the building” and start renovating it.

When you meditate using Yoga what do you do to meditate? I am talking about relaxing Yoga like breathing Yoga.
And with the Zen meditation do you follow the samething? or you are counting your breathing etc?
Please give me example and breathing ratio.
Thank you.
One is Hindu & the other is Buddhist.
they are the same thing; they are both meditation
Zazen is practiced by monks sitting on the floor in the full-lotus, half-lotus, or a few other leg positions, and the monk, with his hands in a mudra in his lap, and eyes half-closed, focuses on breathing from the center of gravity in his body. Monks also focus on koans, or Zen riddles, and practice Shikantaza (just sitting). some monks count as they breathe, others mentally repeat mantras.
There are many different varieties, or styles, of Yoga meditation (Vedanta, Raja, Surat Shabd, Japa, Bhakti, Hatha) and each has it's own way of meditating.
I don't believe there is any set breathing ratio. If you want to learn to meditate, I would suggest going to a Buddhist center or a yoga studio, where someone can teach you to meditate properly.
Both are same and ways to make your mind fresh. by Yog asanas, we remove the distortions and disabilities of the physical body and bring it into discipline. however Pranayama influences the subtle and the physical bodies in a greater measure than Yogsanas do and that too in a perceptible manner. In the human body, lungs, heart and brain hold very important positions and they depend on each other heavily for their health.
They are different because each master in the meditation practice has his own method. Breathing is natural in the Falun Gong meditation.
Guided meditation demonstration video, meditation music, and books about Falun Gong are free to download from the URL listed below. If you need any help, contact a local practitioner in your area for free instructions.
Falun Gong is a unique Buddhist School, found in 1992 by Master Li Hongzhi in China. About 100 million people practice in over 80 countries worldwide. Falun Gong is an ancient practice for the body, mind, and spirit based upon the universal principles of Truthfulness, Compassion, and Tolerance. Falun Gong consists of five sets of powerful exercises.
Falun Gong, Tibetans, other Buddhists, and Christians have been persecuted in China. the most offensive human right violation is the organ harvesting from the Falun Gong practitioners in China.

What is the big difference between Yoga breathing and Zen Meditation?
Joanie, who asked that her last name not be used, said she and other witches are looking forward to Halloween, which she calls “Samhain” (sounds like “sow-when”).
“It’s our new year. It’s the beginning of the new year for us. It’s the end of what we call the wheel of our year,” she said.
“Samhain to us is when the veil between the worlds are at the thinnest. It’s when you can call your ancestors, when you can honor the dead, when you can have more contact with the netherworlds and the other beings that are out there.”
Some prefer to be called Wiccans or pagans, and then there’s Joanie.
“I am a witch,” Joanie said emphatically. “My witchery is my faith. I grew up in this.”
The 54-year-old retiree said her commitment to witchcraft and healing is planted in her family roots in Pennsylvania.
“I come from a family of healers,” she said. “I heal people with herbs and I also can heal animals.”
Howard, 43, another member of the craft, was brought to witchery by a quest for spirituality.
“In my mid-20s, I was introduced to witchcraft. And up until my mid-20s, I had been searching for a spiritual guide or something, and I could never fit in,” the soft-spoken Kingman man said. “I tried different churches. I tried different religions. I went to a Baptist church and the Church of Christ and different things, and I could never fit in.”
He found his comfort zone in witchery.
“Witchcraft is a form of religion to me, and I use it to help others, heal others and try to better everybody around me,” Howard said. “I would love to stress the point that witchcraft is not evil. It’s not about I’m going to put a hex on you to hurt you. It’s about the beauty of nature.”
Howard and Joanie and another pagan, Shelly, prefer use of their first names only, or an alternate name, for fear that public recognition could cost them a job or other hardships.
Shelly, 40, said the practice of witchcraft is widespread.
“The pagan culture is extremely huge in this community,” Shelly said, noting that she knows at least 200 witches in the Kingman area.
Joanie said she and other witches she knows do not appreciate how they’re portrayed on television and in movies.
“We are not bewitched. we don’t tweak our nose,” Joanie said. “I am not charmed and I don’t blow smoke out my fingers.”
So what will they be doing at their party on Halloween?
“We will be eating, drinking and being merry,” Shelly said. “No alcohol by the way. I’ve got children.”

The cause of Halloween is a far cry from modern tradition’s vampires, deception-or-treating and candy corn. Dating back about 2,000 years, Halloween was originally called Samhain, and conspicuous the beginning of the Celtic New Year.
Almost translated from Irish Gaelic, Samhain means “summer’s end,” according to “Creating Circles & Ceremonies: Rituals for all Seasons and Reasons” (Career Press, 2006). in antique times, the holiday evident the transition from the “light” amount of the year to the “dark” portion, as daylight hours became shorter and the weather grew colder. for this reason, the holiday is also known as “harvest’s end” and “winter’s beginning.”
The day was celebrated starting at dusk on October 31 and through the day on November 1. it was believed – and is still believed by Pagans and Wiccans – that Samhain is as soon as the veil concerning this world and the spirit earth is thinnest, and departed spirits can return to mingle with the living.
“in the European traditions, Samhain is the nighttime when the old God dies, and the Crone Spirit mourns him extremely for the after that six weeks,” according to “the Sabbats: A Another approach to Living the old Ways” (Llewellyn Worldwide, 1994). “the popular image of her as the old Halloween hag menacingly stirring her cauldron comes from the Celtic belief that all dead souls return to her cauldron of life, death and rebirth to await reincarnation.”
All Saints Day began to take the place of the Celtic Samhain holiday when the Christian Church began to spread throughout Ireland, around 700 A.D., according to “Ireland” (Random House, inc., 2007). the night before all Saints Day, October 31, came to be called All-Hallows Eve, Hallowmas, or Hallowe’en, according to “Creating Circles & Ceremonies.”
“like many other pagan festivals, the Christians adapted Samhain and made it a Christian event,” said Joan HanniganVogt, a spokesperson for the Tara Circle, an Irish cultural organization in Yonkers, N.Y. “the Celtic people used to celebrate the event by wearing costumes, which represented various Celtic deities.”
The ancient Celtics also lit bonfires to guide the souls of the deceased to “the other side,” played funeral games and kept hearths burning all night for protection from evil spirits. the custom of handing out candy on Halloween stems from the Celtic tradition of giving food and money to costumed celebrants, just in case they were the physical incarnations of lost souls.
“the modern trick or treat is obviously a mimic of the custom of doing things to please the spirits or risk some evil,” HanniganVogt told Life’s Little Mysteries.
The jack-o’-lantern, a Halloween staple, also has its roots deep in Celtic soil. Based on a folklore tale about a forlorn ghost named Jack, jack-o’-lanterns were originally made using a hollowed-out turnip with a small candle inside, and were set out during Samhain to guide lost souls – and scare away evil ones.
When the Irish potato famine of 1846 forced Irish families to flee to North America, the jack-o’-lantern came with them. but turnips were hard to come by in the states, and pumpkins proved to be the perfect substitute, according to “Halloween and Commemorations of the Dead” (Infobase Publishing, 2009). Americans embraced Irish Halloween festivities, and the jack-o’-lantern tradition carries on to this day.
So these days yoga is a very common word. 50 years ago it was not something commonplace that the general population spoke about. but it has gained popularity by being practiced by celebrities and famous athletes and has become an accepted means of exercise by the masses. I think you can even do yoga on Wii now-an assisted yoga program on a video game. Wow.
But nonetheless, it does have a mysterious and intimidating allure to it. most people that you talk to that have never actually practiced yoga will say that it is something that they have always wanted to try.perhaps they are afraid of the unknown or they don’t know where to start as there are many different styles.
Yoga in any form is a great addition to any workout regimen. it lengthens the limbs and improves flexibility, strength and mental clarity. Yoga in tandem with weight training has great benefits. it can allow you to lunge deeper and squat lower, bend further, and lift heavier over time. it can help ward off those nasty sore muscles and increases posture (which makes everyone look instantly leaner). I find that during yoga sessions truly do experience a feeling of peace and that I am able to focus on just the task at hand instead of the grocery list, laundry and the details of my meeting with clients.
So how do you get going? Ask your friends or gym buddies. every one knows someone who does yoga or has taken a class here or there. Have them take you for your first time. most of the time, yoga studios even have promotions for members to bring a friend and maybe get a discount. If you are nervous about what it’s going to be like when you get there, do a little homework, find out the style of the class you will be attending, and rent a yoga video to get a head start on the poses.
If all else fails and you can’t find someone to go with, just brave it alone. what is the worst that could possibly happen? You feel stupid? You don’t get the poses perfect? Who cares? in time, it will become more comfortable and you will get better and better. no one is ever great at something the first time. that is why the saying goes “practice makes perfect”.
So the key, is to practice, practice, practice… and then practice some more.
Most people are unaware that there are various branches of yoga which include: Jnana Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Karma Yoga and the beloved Raja Yoga. Raja Yoga, which was established by the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, and known simply as “Yoga” in the context of Hindu philosophies, is just one of the six schools of thought.
Yoga works on a mental, emotional and spiritual level and any time practicing Yoga is time well spent. I urge you to embrace yoga as part of your life, you will be so happy you did and your mind, body and spirit will thank you for it.

How Yoga Can Help Your Workout
A lighthearted musical volley between Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) and none other than Ozzy Osbourne turned some conservative heads Saturday.
MTV described the performance this way:
”[Islam] hit the stage with an acoustic rendition of “Peace Train.” however, instead of letting Yusuf placidly strum along, Colbert stormed the stage, ranting about the song’s message of harmony. The satirical pundit then proclaimed, “My train is arriving at the stage now and the conductor has an important announcement to make!”
Colbert did a fine job of busting up the performance, and cleared the way for a surprise appearance from one of rock and roll’s greatest show-stoppers: Ozzy Osbourne. Decked out in a black ensemble with his signature colored glasses, the Prince of Darkness screamed as he took the stage and led the band through the metal classic “Crazy Train.”
However, before Osbourne could finish, Stewart snatched the mic and reprised the whole interrupting-the-rock-legend-thing, spewing protests like, “I will not get on that train! I am not comfortable on that train!” Stewart commanded Yusuf to start up again with “Peace Train,” until Colbert jumped in, saying, “I’m gonna pull the emergency brake on this rainbow, moonbeam choo-choo!” Osbourne and Yusuf went back and forth, volleying metal and folk classics about trains, until both gave up the fight, embraced each other and left the stage.”
Cat Stevens’ appearance was too much for Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey. He wrote: “What I find amazing about this is that two stars from Comedy Central would share the stage with a man who supported the idea of murdering an artist for his remarks on Islam.”
The musican ran into some serious criticism in 1989 (yep, more than 20 years ago) for allegedly supporting a fatwa (an Islamic legal proclamation, in this case calling for death) issued by Ayatollah Khomeini against Satanic Verses author Salman Rushdie.
He earned the attention of the U.S. government, which prevented him from entering the country in 2004. but since then, he’s made “peace” with the authorities. Nonetheless, journalists like Weekly Standard writer Michael Goldfarb still think he’s the anti-Christ:
Goldfarb tweeted: “What the fuck. Sanity = supporting fatwa against Salman Rushdie?”
The Telegraph’s US editor Toby Harnden looked into the matter, and also concluded that Stevens/Islam is not to be embraced:
“Let's have no more rubbish about how "green" and innocent this man was.”
In the battle of “Trains,” crazy appears to be winning.

Fake yoga instructor from Enfield jailed for sex attacks against women
8:40am Thursday 21st October 2010
A PERVERTED handyman from Enfield who posed as a yoga expert to sexually assault three women has been jailed for four years.
Kyno Hunt, 32, of Bennets Lodge, Chase Court Gardens, was employed as a heating engineer which allowed him to visit the homes of his victims then coax them into an all-fours position stating he was a trained Yoga instructor.
he would use the ploy in order to create an opportunity where he could come into close physical contact and then sexually assault the innocent women.
Hunt was found guilty of three charges of sexual assault and jailed for four years at Wood Green Crown Court, on Tuesday, October 19. he will also be listed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. the jury cleared him of a fourth allegation of sexual assault.
the first count relates to an attack against a woman from Cheshunt in February 2008 but it was not until September 2010 that “manipulative” Hunt was caught after assaulting an Enfield woman.
after her ordeal, the brave victim reported the incident to Enfield police whose specialist rape unit, Sapphire, immediately launched an investigation.
As a result of their efforts the woman in Cheshunt, and another woman who was attacked by Hunt in April at her Broxbourne home came forward.
the last woman had been tricked by Hunt into crouching on her hands and knees in order under the guise that she she needed to get a better view of the airing cupboard. he then sexually assaulted her.
Detective Inspector Daniel Smith, of Sapphire unit, said: “Hunt is clearly a manipulative and brazen individual who preyed on women, abusing his position and assaulting the victims in their own homes.
“My team of officers are committed to tackling serious sexual assault and ensuring those responsible are held accountable for their actions. I would encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of Hunt to contact my team on 020 8345 4326.”

Gyms, fitness studios, health clubs and wellness centers around the world are adding yoga classes to their schedules, but how do you find the right class for you? Yoga styles today range from very gentle and meditative to vigorous and technically demanding, says Mara Carrico, the San Diego, California, based author of Yoga Journal’s Yoga Basics—The Essential Beginner’s Guide to Yoga for a Lifetime of Health and Fitness. Selecting a class that fits your goals, physical condition and fitness level is very important. Carrico offers these 10 tips for finding a safe, effective yoga class to include in your workout:
1. Determine your Goals
Potential health and fitness benefits of yoga include strength, flexibility, balance and improved breathing and posture. However, yoga is also an internally focused exercise that may help you calm your mind and increase your concentration skills. you may want to explore yoga as a philosophy, meditative practice or spiritual discipline. Understanding your objectives and level of interest will help you find the right program.
2. consider the Different Types of Yoga Available
The physical component of yoga—called hatha yoga—consists of poses and breathing techniques that prepare the body for stillness, creating physical strength and stamina, while allowing the mind to remain calm. There are numerous styles of hatha yoga. for example, Ashtanga (power) yoga is very vigorous, with moves and postures similar to acrobatics; this style is not recommended for beginners. Iyengar is a detailed, technically demanding style of yoga that challenges participants to perform postures with great precision. Viniyoga, Kripalu and Ananda yoga are less detailed in technique and more suited to novices looking for stretching and relaxation.
3. consider How and Where you Want to take Yoga
If your goals are primarily fitness related, you may want to take yoga at a fitness facility. for more in-depth training from master teachers, look for an ashram, an academy or a studio that is dedicated entirely to yoga. if you prefer individualized attention, you may want to study with a yoga coach or yoga-trained personal trainer. Today, many turn to the internet for yoga content. consider online yoga with the Gaiam Yoga Club for a holistic introduction to yoga.
4. consider your Physical Limitations
Always check with your doctor before beginning a new fitness program. most educated, experienced yoga instructors are sensitive to their students physical limitations and knowledgeable of the contraindications that might be applicable. However, you also need to recognize that your physical condition should influence the type of yoga you choose to practice. for example, if you have sciatica, you should avoid forward bends and intense hamstring stretches. if you are pregnant or have high blood pressure, ear congestion or eye problems, you should avoid holding your breath or doing inverted poses, such as shoulder stands and headstands. Problems with your neck, shoulders, wrists, knees, back, feet or ankles may also require modified techniques. Fully inform your instructor of any physical problems you have.
5. Find Out about your Instructor’s Experience and Credentials
Ask your instructor about his or her yoga training and teaching experience. many different certifications are available. your teachers education and experience should demonstrate a commitment to safety, professionalism and ongoing education.
6. Ask Lots of Questions in Advance
Before beginning a class, ask the instructor if it is appropriate for you and will help you meet your specific goals.
7. Listen to your Body
During class, do not force or strain, and remember to breathe. Do not attempt poses that feel uncomfortable or painful. 8. Discuss your Experience With your Instructor
Inform your instructor if certain postures or exercises are problematic for you. He or she should be able to offer an explanation and suitable modifications. 9. Try a Variety of Classes
Don’t be reluctant to admit that a certain style of yoga or yoga instruction is not for you. Try as many classes and instructors as necessary.
10. Be Patient With your Progress
Mastering yoga takes time. Don’t be discouraged if you do not learn as quickly as you would like. the more you practice, the more you will realize the many benefits of this discipline.

Finding the Best Yoga Class for You
Tom Barela, the physical education teacher at Denver's Colfax Elementary School, grew up playing football and basketball in his gym student days.
But on Monday, he was down on the floor alongside a class of kindergarteners roaring like a baby dragon, then hissing like a cobra, then steadying himself like a frog on a lily pad.
Leading the class was yoga instructor Allyson Levine, who started coming to the west Denver school four years ago to offer three classes a week to supplement the school's P.E. offerings.
This year, she's leading 12 classes a week at the school, thanks to a partnership between DPS and The Wellness Initiative, a four-year-old Boulder-based nonprofit that provides yoga instruction to more than 2,000 students in 20 predominantly low-income schools.
For 45 minutes, Levine put the students through a series of breathing exercises, stretching and flexibility routines, creative visualization, and movements to improve balance and focus.
Preliminary findings of research on the effects of TWI's yoga instruction in public schools indicate that at least half of the students who participate report improved physical prowess as well as more self-confidence and optimism, and that 60 to 70 percent used the breathing and visualization exercises they learned in yoga to help them outside of gym class.
Barela couldn't be more pleased, even though the yoga takes up a third of his students' gym class time each week.
"At first, I wasn't quite sure about it. but now I think it's great," he said. "Even though it isn't vigorous exercise, it is moderate activity, and it improves the students flexibility. it also helps them learn to rest and to focus better.”
He’s had some physically disabled students who excel at the activity.
“not every child is an amazing athlete,” Barela said, “but I have some who are amazing at yoga."
Yoga isn't new, of course. but many schools have been slow to adopt it into the physical education curriculum.
"Years ago, there were protests about bringing yoga into the schools because people were afraid it was religious," said Mara Rose, executive director of TWI. "But what we've done is to train teachers in a curriculum that takes all the Sanskrit words out, so it won't freak anybody out. That's a promise we make to schools. We make it comfortable for teachers and students alike."
The strictly secular "Yoga Ed" curriculum is now taught in more than 150 schools around the country. Rose said principals now typically report one to two students in each school who opt out of the yoga classes, but so far no parental protests have arisen.
Rose says yoga's benefits extend to three areas of student life: physical health, emotional well-being, and academic performance.
"The kids get stronger and more flexible, and the athletes say that after yoga they feel faster and more capable," she said. "Emotionally, they feel the can better manage stress and control anger. their academic performance is mostly related to their ability to focus, to calm themselves in the classroom.
“We've worked with teachers and students prior to CSAPs to help them develop techniques they can use to focus during the tests, and the proctors say they've never seen the kids so calm and focused before."
The Wellness Initiative is not the only organization pushing yoga in Colorado public schools.
Another Boulder group, Calming Kids: creating a Non-violent World, promotes yoga in school as an anti-bullying tool. Storytime Yoga, which integrates children's yoga and storytelling, poetry and healthy eating, is also based in Boulder County. And at a two-day gathering of physical education teachers from across the state last week in Loveland, at least three workshops dealt with in-school yoga.
TWI does serve the most children, however, Rose said.
In addition to its yoga classes for students, TWI offers a two-hour Tools for Teachers workshop to provide classroom teachers with simple yoga-based techniques they can introduce into academic classrooms; and on-site yoga classes for teachers and school staff members before or after regular school hours.
Yoga classes for students run the gamut, from year-long regular exposure to yoga as part of the PE curriculum to less-intensive elective classes, sometimes offered during the school day and sometimes offered before or after school. Cost to provide the yoga instruction averages about $70 per class, but the cost to the school varies depending on students' ability to pay.
"In schools where there's a high percentage of low-income students, we subsidize a large percentage of the cost," Rose said. "In schools that serve more affluent students, we rely on the school or the parents to support the program."
The Wellness Initiative is working with the Center for Policy Research to conduct research on the effects of yoga instruction in the schools. Rose expects a significant amount of data to be available within the year, but she has some preliminary findings based on a survey of 47 high school students from four schools who participated in 6 to 42 yoga sessions. their average age was 15, and 70 percent had no previous exposure to yoga.

P.E. with a twist: More schools offer yoga
Before you begin to learn yoga you must first decide what you are hoping to learn from yoga. The simple fact is yoga can provide many benefits on the body and mind.
If fitness is the sole aim of why you wish to practice yoga then you will leave your mind closed of to the benefits that it can have on you mentally. if you decide to perform yoga for the sole reason of gaining spiritual enlightenment and the positive effects it can have on you mentally then the fitness aspect may not be exploited to its full potential.
What I would recommend and believe everyone who is interested in taking up this practice is to enter it with an open mind. Learn the basics to yoga first and then as you become more adapt to the postures, poses and mental side that it teaches then and only then will you begin to expand and reap the full benefits of yoga.
Many practitioners of yoga often talk about it uniting the mind, body and spirit through the practice of yoga exercises. I am not saying this is a false statement as I do belive that it can reap those benefits, but many people who enter into yoga for the first time have a perception that they will gain this enlightenment and benefits instantly.
Where as the truth is that it takes many years of practice and dedication to reach these levels. When you start performing yoga for the first time you will begin to notice a difference, but it is essential that you take it a small step at a time. There is a reason that yoga is the oldest existing (what I like to call) mind and body system around, this is due to the fact that it helps to aid in providing a great level fitness, has known health benefits and can help in improving a persons mental state.
One of the main reasons why yoga has such a huge benefit on the body is because it stretches the muscles therefore when you perform a yoga workout it would have a similar effect of a massage which will ensure that the ideal blood supply can be reached by every organ.
The beauty of yoga is that there are many different forms which gives everyone the chance to find what one suits them best. Don’t just set your mind on one type of yoga, try out a few different routines, see which one suits you best.
Different forms of yoga can effect different people in many different ways. so make sure to find out which type will provide the maximum benefit on your mind and body. Yoga can be a very strenuous exercise so make sure that you do not push yourself to much when you start of. this can result in an injury. so take your time to build yourself up and when you feel extremely comfortable then begin to push yourself more.
Below are a list of the most common yoga practices
Ashtanga (Also known as power yoga) – Perfect for the person who wants a very hard workout session. It concentrate less on meditation and more on tough physical exercise.
Iyengar – this is a classical form of yoga and is seen as the best starting block for beginners. many props are used in this yoga style.
Bikram – Must be carried out in a room that is over 38C or higher. There are 26 postures that are carried out in a specific order.
Hatha – very chilled out form of yoga which focuses on poses that flow from to another at a very easy pace.
Kundlini – Includes mantras, visualizations, guided relaxation and meditations.
Kripalu – a flowing and meditation orientated. There are 3 stages and the person will perform from stage one to stage three.
Sivananda – this type of yoga consists of a series of 12 poses
Viniyoga – this form helps to develop strength balance and healing. this is probably the most ideal form of yoga for elders, beginners and people with muscle injuries
Raja-yoga – this is aimed at people who are capable of intense concentration
Bhakti-yoga – Helps a person to gain focus on self surrender when in the face of the divine
Mantra-yoga – this is a meditation like yoga which focuses on the verbal repetition or can be mental to empowering sounds such as (om and ram)
The top five are the most commons forms of yoga. Remember if you do decide to try yoga out, take your time, do not push yourself to hard at first, enter into it with an open mind and find out what type of yoga suits you best.
