Two Companies to Build Wind Farm off Northwestern University (USA) >> Offshore Wind

A firm interested in building an offshore wind farm 6 to 9 miles east of Northwestern University estimates the cost would run about $313 million.

Speaking to Evanston officials last week, an official with Mercury Wind Energy said the company would raise the financing and would own the wind farm but that the average price of electricity could be held constant for the next 20 years.

Company founder Lyle Harrison pledged to help fix the city’s dilapidated train bridges and committed to building a new engineering and science laboratory at the high school.

Under a proposal by off Grid Technologies, the city eventually could own the farm.

Luke Townsend, legal counsel for off Grid, said a feasibility study would cost $1.8 million.

Neither firm’s representatives nor council members went into any depth on environmental issues, such as the effects on birds and wildlife, in the relatively brief presentations.

“It’s very exciting that we’re talking about this, that we’ve reached the next step,” Ald. Jane Grover said.
