MORE than a thousand random breath tests were conducted during a police blitz on traffic yesterday but not one driver returned a positive test.
it was a “good result” for the first eight hours of Operation St George Pearl, which targeted heavy vehicles, defective vehicles and traffic offenders “as usual”.
The State’s Mobile Police Facility (MPF) and the Roadside Drug Testing Unit were in operation on the Bruce Highway south of Gympie, aiding local officers from Gympie’s CIB, Traffic Branch and general duties.
Sgt Peter Bailey said it was too early to comment yesterday, having only received rough figures from the operation.
“Of the 1155 (random breath tests) conducted yesterday, no drivers were over the limit,” he said.
“eight traffic infringement notices were issued for a number of life-endangering offences, including unrestrained children and unaccompanied learner drivers. One notice to appear (in court) was given for unlicensed driving and three police drug diversions were issued to people found in possession of minor amounts of drugs and drug utensils.”
The operation continued overnight and will end at midnight tonight.
