Elves are in the building 'A Day in the Life of an Elf' returns for Macy's 8th-floor display

The Elves return to Macy’s downtown Minneapolis store Saturday for the 48th annual holiday display, a revival of “A Day in the Life of an Elf,” a locally created story that depicts Santa’s elves at the North Pole as they prepare for Christmas.

New this year is Macy’s Puppet Theater performing the original “Moose Crossing,” a trio of song-filled tales including the voices of Julie Andrews, Mario Cantone, John Tartaglia and Walter Cronkite.

The eighth-floor auditorium display remains free, but tickets to the puppet theater are $4 per person (children under 2 are free). The 25-minute puppet show will be performed throughout the day Thursdays through Sundays, through Dec. 23. Tickets will be available 30 minutes before each performance.

Festivities in the store auditorium will also include Mrs. Claus’ Bakery and Santa’s toyshop, where gifts and treats will be for sale.

And, of course, there’s a chance to visit with Santa and have a photo taken him.

The holiday display will be open though Dec. 30.

Macy’s also continues its “Believe” campaign this holiday season: for every letter to Santa mailed at Macy’s, the national department store chain will donate a dollar to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. in the first two years of the program, Macy’s collected more than 2.5 million letters.
