NYC Marathon event kicked off at 8:30am EST, when most people were still enjoying the extra hour of sleep granted by the end of daylight savings time. the race started at the Verrazano Bridge with nearly 44,000 people from around the world participating.
The more than 26 mile race had participants trekking through various areas of the city, including the burrough of Queens, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. the race finished up in famous Central Park with Ethiopia's Gebre Gebremariam winning the men's division with a time of just over 2 hours 8 minutes. Fellow African Edna Kiplagat topped the women's division with a completion time of 2 hours 28 minutes.
David Weir and Masazumi Soejima topped the wheelchair division of the race, finishing in 1 hour 31 minutes, just two seconds apart. Similar action took place in the hand-cycle division, with Dane Pilon and Arkadiusz Skrzypinski following only a second behind. in the American men's division of the maratho, Meb Keflezighi took first place with Dathan Ritzenhein trailing a minute behind. the American women's title was taken by Shalane Flanagan.

In his new York City Marathon debut, Ethiopian Gebre Gebremariam won the 26.2 mile-race, finishing strong in Central Park to finish first in a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 14 seconds (2:08.14).
Gebre GebremariaGebre Gebremariam wins new York City Marathon, Edna Kiplagat wins women’s title, Chilean miner on coursem was running alongside Kenyan Emmanuel Mutai for the final miles of the new York City Marathon through Central Park, but pulled away for a strong finish for the title. Kenya wasn’t shut out in the NYC Marathon though. Edna Kiplagat had a similar strong finish to take first place in the women’s division in a time of 2:28.20. Right behind Edna Kiplagat was American Shalane Flanagan, who finished second in her first new York City Marathon, 20 seconds behind Kiplagat at 2:28.40.
Those are some pretty impressive debuts for Flanagan and Gebre Gebremariam, who started the race among a record field of 45,344 runners, according to the new York Times.
Another big story in the NYC Marathon was record-holder Haile Gebrselassie dropping out of the marathon halfway through the race. he dropped out with an existing knee injury at the Queensboro Bridge and cleared the way for fellow Ethiopian Gebramariam to take the title.
Still on the course is rescued Chilean miner Edison Pena, who is hoping to finish the race in six hours. Sprots Gather
