Latest news about Bay Bridge: a driver who claimed to be armed with a gun and explosives stopped his vehicle on the upper deck on the Bay Bridge Thursday morning and created a standoff with police that halted all westbound traffic, CBS San Francisco reports.
The man has since been taken into custody by authorities.
Westbound traffic had been stopped at the toll plaza, California Highway Patrol Sgt. John Carman said.
The patrol reopened some westbound lanes shortly after 8 a.m. Eastbound lanes on the lower desk remained open during the incident.
The man called KCBS 740 Radio to say he had a gun and explosives and was distraught over his marital situation.
The driver had his daughter in his SUV, according to authorities. the SUV stopped near the center anchorage and the daughter ran toward police, who told officers her father was indeed armed. the age of the daughter and the alleged gunman was not known.
The driver stepped out of his SUV and was seen sitting on the bridge railing and talking on a cell phone.
He climbed over a side barrier and threatened to jump off the bridge, according to the San Jose Mercury News.
An average of 280,000 motorists use the iconic bridge each day.
