Mesa star-mangled flags replaced after calls on poor conditions

Old Glory isn’t always so glorious in Mesa.

In the months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, it became a statement of patriotic pride to fly the American flag outside homes and businesses.

But a three-week visual inspection of more than 100 flags around town by the Mesa Republic revealed more than two- dozen cases where flags were severely tattered, faded or torn in violation of the U.S. Flag Code.

The locations ranged from an RV dealership to a municipal building in east Mesa to a military-oriented civic organization.

Even before this story’s publication, calls from a newspaper reporter seeking comment on flags in poor condition brought almost immediate action:
