Teessiders will have chance to show their appreciation of a trio of the region’s Commonwealth medalists before the kick-off to Saturday’s big match when Simon  Vallily, Sarah Borwell and Paul Drinkhall parade around the Riverside pitch.

Middlesbrough boxer Simon took gold in the heavyweight division in Delhi, Middlesbrough tennis ace Sarah won bronze in the mixed doubles and Loftus-born double-medal winner Paul took silver in the table tennis team event and bronze in the mixed doubles.

Boro’s Communications Manager Dave Allan said: “we are delighted that Sarah, Simon and Paul are able to join us with their guests.

“I am sure Boro fans will want to applaud them for the way they have represented Teesside with such sporting distinction.”

The trio, who will have their Commonwealth medals with them, will be introduced onto the Riverside pitch at 2.45pm.

Other Teessiders who won Commonwealth medals were Redcar’s Johanna Jackson (gold, 20k race walk), track cyclist David Daniell (silver, keirin) table tennis ace Danny Reed (silver, team event) and swimmer Jemma Lowe (bronze, 100m butterfly).

Although they are not available this weekend due to training or competition commitments, Middlesbrough FC officials have invited them to a future Boro game to gain more much deserved recognition for their achievements
