Endorsements for a pivotal ballot today

the Sacramento Bee believes that an informed electorate is the bedrock of a sturdy democracy. Endorsements are one of many sources of information voters can use in making their decisions. That’s why the Bee’s editorial board offers recommendations in competitive races. below are our endorsements for today’s election.

Secretary of State

Insurance Commissioner

Superintendent of Public

Instruction (nonpartisan)

House of Representatives

District 3: Dan Lungren (R)

Badly written initiative that legalizes marijuana and leaves regulation and taxation in local hands.

Overreaches in transferring authority for drawing congressional districts to a redistricting commission.

Creates secure funding for state parks, and free parks admission for state motorists, through a hike in the vehicle license fee.

A power play by cities and redevelopment agencies.

Initiative bankrolled by Texas oil companies would suspend state’s global warming law indefinitely.

Goes too far in attempting to repeal corporate tax breaks of 2008 and 2009, one of which lawmakers have already delayed.

One-sided effort at budget reform, allowing lawmakers to approve budget on a majority vote, instead of two-thirds.

Would require two-thirds legislative vote to increase fees, potentially undermining environmental and health programs.

Eliminates redistricting commission set to draw electoral districts for Legislature and Board of Equalization next year.
