This could be the weekend Gregg Sulkin goes from part-timer to A-lister in the Disney Channel’s stable of bankable young stars.
Sulkin plays Mason Greybeck, the werewolf boyfriend of Alex Russo (Selena Gomez), on “Wizards of Waverly Place” (season premiere tomorrow at 9:45 p.m.) and also stars in the Disney Channel original movie “Avalon High” (tomorrow at 8 p.m.).
Based on the young-adult novel by Meg Cabot, “Avalon High” spotlights a group of students who begin to live out the roles of King Arthur and his Knights of the round Table in the halls of their high school. Sulkin plays Will Wagner.
While the 18-year-old mop-topped Brit hesitates to say who his character corresponds to in Arthurian legend, he will say he’s a leader at the school.
You do the math.
“He’s an all-around good guy,” Sulkin told the Herald during a telephone interview while driving through Times Square in New York City. “He’s the star quarterback of the school, which is something completely different for me. I’ve never played American football in my life.”
Learning the game provided the cast with a unique bonding experience while shooting in New Zealand, Sulkin said.
The Friday night Sulkin bloc could lead to an interesting Monday morning.

“I don’t know what it’s going to be like,” the actor said of his big Disney Channel weekend. “I just hope the movie does well, and also the season premiere of ‘Wizards.’ We really do put a lot of hard work into both, and they’re run by very talented and knowledgeable people.”
This season, “Wizards” follows the Russo family after they’ve been outed as wizards but try to maintain normal lives. Sulkin’s character will be more prominent as he woos Alex.
“The first day on the set, I was slightly nervous,” he said of his start on the show. “Now it feels like my home in America. David Henrie (who plays Justin Russo) is my best friend. They’re all just really, really nice, down-to-earth, very outgoing and real. They’ve always looked out for me and been there for me.”
Sulkin attended the Highgate School in London – he was a classmate of Freddy Highmore’s (“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “The Spiderwick Chronicles”) before relocating to this country.
“ ‘Wizards’ was my first American job,” Sulkin said. “That’s why I’m super-grateful to Disney. It’s given me my start here in America.”
Now Sulkin is off to Washington to shoot the big-screen film “Camilla Dickinson” outside Disney’s protective walls.
“I do projects for Disney, but it’s not like I belong to them,” he said. “I appreciate what they do, but as an actor you want to do different things, too. The key is finding the right balance.”
