Freddie Head, trainer of the brilliant French-based mare Goldikova, isn’t about to be drawn into comparing her with the amazing American mare Zenyatta.
In the weeks before this Breeders’ Cup, Head has been asked often to give his opinion on which is the better racehorse. after Goldikova trained Wednesday morning at Churchill Downs, European and American reporters were at it again.
Head, as usual, responded diplomatically.
“It’s very different,” Head said. “You can’t compare. It’s a lot different in Europe. In Europe you have to compete with colts all the time. Zenyatta, she hasn’t been beaten. She’s a champion.”
But so is Goldikova, Head said.
Racing followers on both sides of the pond can see that.
On Saturday, Goldikova will run on the Churchill Downs’ turf course with a chance to score her third consecutive victory in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. She comes into the race with 14 victories in 20 starts. She has run in 11 races against males at the highest class levels in Europe and the United States.
Zenyatta, who be running for a repeat victory Saturday in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, will be making her second start against males.
This year, Goldikova has won four of five races.
“Goldikova has been competing against colts all year, the best of her generation,” Head said.
