MIDDLEBORO — a variety of activities are planning for the coming weeks at the Leonard E. Simmons Multi-service Center (Council on Aging), 558 Plymouth St., in addition to the meals served in the dining room on weekdays.
November 8 – Pork roast w/gravy, roasted potato, broccoli, oatmeal bread, mixed fruit cup
November 9 – Baked scallops, baked potato, cole slaw, bran bread, strawberry shortcake
November 10 – Meatball sub, garden salad, apricots, fruited jell-o
November 11 – VETERAN’S DAY, COA CLOSED
November 12 – Chicken parmesan with penne pasta, spinach, pineapple chunks, scali bread
Drink, lunch and dessert and available for a $4 donation. Lunch is served at noon. Coffee and pastries are available in the morning for a 25 cent donation.
Sign-ups for lunch are a must. Sign up yourself and your guest by calling the COA at 508-946-2490. Everyone is invited. there is no age limit.
1ST FRIDAY NITE OUT: Tomorrow, 7 p.m. “The Bounty Hunter” (2010). Starring: Gerard Butler, Jennifer Aniston, and Gio Perez. PG-13 – 113 minutes, action/comedy/crime/romance. Milo Boyd, a down-on-his-luck bounty hunter, gets his dream job when he is assigned to track down his bail-jumping ex-wife, reporter Nicole Hurly. The exes continually one-up each other, until they find themselves on the run for their lives. They thought their promise to love, honor and obey was tough-staying alive is going to be a whole lot tougher. Call the COA to make a reservation.
FREE LEGAL ADVICE: Attorney Youngberg will be at the COA on Tuesday, Nov. 8 to answer questions on simple estate planning, health care proxies and Mass Health issues. Call the COA at 508-946-2490 to set up your free 20-minute appointment.
HEARING SCREENINGS: Free hearing screenings and free minor repairs to hearing aids are provided by a board certified specialist, John Klefeker, who is at the COA monthly. The next date is set for Nov. 9 from 1-3 p.m. by appointment only. Call the COA to set up a half-hour appointment.
CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP: Wednesday, Nov. 10, 7-8:30 p.m. Topic of Discussion is a new video, “There is a Bridge,” with guest speaker Scott Ciosek from Beacon Hospice in Plymouth with discussion to follow. this DVD documentary demonstrated that people with Alzheimer’s or a related dementia are able to maintain emotionally meaningful relationships. “There is a Bridge” will change the way people view Alzheimer’s disease and how they see themselves. HEALTH CARE REFORM IMPACT ON MEDICARE BENEFICIARIES: Nov. 10, 6:30 p.m. Learn how Health Care Reform will affect Medicare beneficiaries. Review changes to part D plans, Supplement plans and Medicare Advantage plans. Officials from SHINE (Serving Health Information needs of Elders) will be present to answer questions. this presentation is free, but reservations are requested. Call the COA at 508-946-2490 for more information and to reserve a seat. Refreshments will be served.
DAYTIME MOVIE & POPCORN: Thursday, Nov. 18, 12:45 p.m. “TOOTH FAIRY” (2010) Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Ashley Judd, and Julie Andrews. PG – 101 minutes Comedy/Family/Fantasy. Derek Thompson is “The Tooth Fairy,” a hard-charging minor league hockey player whose nickname comes from his habit of knocking out teeth. When he is sentenced to one week’s hard labor as a real tooth fairy (complete with tutu, wings & magic wand), he finds he “can’t handle the tooth” and slowly begins to rediscover his own forgotten dreams. CRAFT FAIR: Nov. 19 at the COA, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sponsored by Middleborough Services to the Elderly. Baked goods, gifts, jewelry, and a white elephant table. New crafters wanted. Call 508-947-7203 to a reserve a table.
FUEL ASSISTANCE: New application appointments for those over 60 have begun. Residents who call the front desk for an appointment (no walk-ins) will be mailed a list of required verifications. If applicants do not have all the necessary paperwork for their appointment, their application may be delayed.
ITEMS NEEDED: The COA food program budget has been reduced drastically. Next time you are grocery shopping, can you think of the COA and pick up an item or two and drop them off at the front desk? Items that are needed: coffee-regular and decaf, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, paper towels, disposable lasagna pans, tomato paste, bread crumbs, Uncle Ben’s rice or rice pilaf, potatoes, raisins, laundry soap, potholders.
H.U.G (Hearts Understanding Grief): Knowing that others truly understand your feelings may be a great comfort. Meetings are Fridays from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
BLOOD PRESSURE CLINICS are offered by the the town nurses on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m.
WII BOWLING TOURNAMENTS are held on Mondays from 12:45-2 p.m.
FOOD PANTRY: Donations are accepted for the elder emergency food pantry. low sodium soups and meats, low sugar canned fruits and supermarket gift certificates.
RECYCLING: Drop off newspapers, magazines, junk mail, and catalogs in the outside recycling bin and help the COA raise funds.
Seniors who do not receive the COA’s monthly newsletter in the mail should call the office at 508-946-2490 to sign up. this is also the number to call for appointments, to register for programs, and for all other information.
